The axe should be dropping anytime soon on Real Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui. According to reports, Antonio Conte is waiting in the wings to take over from the embattled Lopetegui.
Following Barcelona’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Los Blancos on Sunday, reports have emerged that Lopetegui will be sacked today and most likely replaced by former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte.
“We have to take a decision. We can’t continue like this any longer,” a Real Madrid source is quoted to have said.
Lopetegui on his part cut a forlorn figure on the touchline as Barca deservedly thumped their eternal rivals at the Camp Nou. Speaking to reporters after the debacle, Lopetegui said:
“I feel sad at the moment, but with full strength to remain in charge of this group.
“This is a tough blow, but I am strong enough to know everything can be turned around. There is a long way to go, and I have a lot of faith in this group of players.”
Meanwhile, Madrid captain Sergio Ramos when questioned about Lopetegui’s future made it clear that the players had no input in the Spaniard’s future whatsoever.
“It is not our decision. So we will stay to the side, let the hours pass and whatever happens will happen. It’s not about the players.” he said
Conte is expected in Spain on Monday as Lopetegui’s time at the Bernabeu draws to an ignominious end.
